Juliet pushed her food around on her plate, unable to concentrate on whatever Shawn was saying. Normally, she was always engaged in the conversation on their dates, but right now all Juliet could think about was what a crappy day she had had.
First she had been late to work. (Never a good thing.) Then had ended up doubled over in pain due to menstrual cramps. (Something Carlton didn't really understand.) Last and worst, another "Yinite" had come to the station. A middle aged women claiming to have been kidnapped by Yin. Juliet thought it was sick; people pretending to have gone through what she went through just for attention. This women especially had left her pretty shaken up.
"Jules?" Shawn's voice pulled her out of her thoughts. "You okay? You haven't touched your food."
"I'm fine, I just..." She pursed her lips and continued quietly, "what if he comes back?"
"Who, Elvis?" Shawn asked. "Because regardless of what Gus says, I don't think that's happening anytime soon."
"Why would I be worried about Elvis coming back?"
"Maybe you have a fear of singers with weird sideburns." Shawn suggested. "Oh, I know! You're afraid of Michael Jackson coming back."
"Yin, Shawn!" Juliet burst out. "What if Yin comes back?"
Shawn's childish expression melted into a more serious one. "Did another Yinite come today?"
Jules took a shaky breath and nodded. "She asked to speak with me and came up with some sob story about almost being dropped off the same clock tower."
"What did you do?" Shawn asked.
"I yelled at her that this was a very serious, and very personal matter, and that she should get the hell out of the station before I pressed charges."
"Damn," Shawn said, "I'll bet that shut her up."
"Yeah." Juliet felt tears well up inside of her as she remembered being on the clock tower, certain that she wouldn't live to see another day. And now some sickos were reenacting it for fun.
"Hey," Shawn stood up, holding out his arms for a hug. "C'mere."
Juliet stood up and buried her face into his shirt, letting all her pent up emotions out as she cried.
Shawn rubbed her back and spoke softly. "Look, Jules, I don't know how or where it's gonna happen, but you can bet your ass that when Yin does come back we will put him behind bars before he can hurt you, or Gus or anyone else I care about.
She let out a weak smile, even though Shawn couldn't see. Juliet couldn't even begin to express how grateful she was that she could talk to him about this. But her smile soon faded as another thought hit her. “What about you, Shawn?” she asked quietly. “Everyone Yin has targeted have been people close to you, so what if he comes after you next?”
Shawn was silent for a moment before he spoke again. “C’mon Jules, you know I can always wriggle my way out of dangerous situations. I’m like a worm, slipping through the hands of homicidal serial killers.”
Juliet wasn’t convinced. “You’re not invincible, Shawn.”
“No, but Gus is, and I can always use him as a human shield.” His tone turned more serious. “And I know that no matter what you, Gus, and even Lassie will have my back.”
Juliet relaxed into Shawn’s warm embrace, reassured for now. It was comforting knowing that there were people around her that would protect both her and those she cared about most. As they slowly pulled away Jules realized that people had been at staring the couple who had just been hugging for way too long in the middle of the restaurant.
“How about we pay the check and get out of here.” Juliet suggested quietly.
“Sounds like a plan.”
