Author's Chapter Notes:

So, while waiting for the finale, I began re-watching Ghost Whisperer.  An idea came to me to mash the two together.  Shawn meeting Melinda and a whole ghost story behind it made perfect sense!  Enjoy!

Melinda Gordon turned the key to her antique shop, Same As It Never Was Antiques, and walked inside the darkened store with a small smile on her face.  She had just worked with Eli James the night before, getting a particularly stubborn ‘Earth-Bound’ spirit to cross over into the light.

The family of the deceased had been very closed-minded until the ghost gave Eli that crucial piece of info that convinced them otherwise.  He, that is, the ghost, would not talk to Melinda for some peculiar reason at first.  Come to find out that he mistrusted people in life unless they were therapists, which was Eli’s specialty.

She looked up upon hearing the bell ring at the door,  seeing Delia walk in with her son, Ned, close behind.

“Hi, Delia.  Hi, Ned,” Melinda said, turning on the lights in the back and down to the basement.

“Good Morning, Melinda.  How’d it go last night?” Delia asked.

There was a time in the past that the older woman would’ve thought Melinda was ‘not all there’ with the ghost stuff, but after being convinced herself on several occasions, plus her son now studying Anthropology and the Occult in college, she had warmed up to the whole ‘after-life’ thing.

“Ugh, it was so difficult.  Jack would only talk to Eli, so I had to stand there and just offer words of encouragement to the family while Eli tried to convince him to go toward the light.  It took two hours before he finally was convinced his family would be all right.  I had an easier time with the Watchers!” she answered, picking up an old doll and placing it on a shelf behind the register.

Delia shook her head in amusement, “By the way you two were talking, it sounded like you were about to give up on Jack,” she giggled.

Melinda turned, smiling, “Never, Delia Banks.  Nobody or nothing could ever make me give up on helping others.”

The door opened, revealing Melinda’s husband, Samuel James Lucas.  It was really her late husband, Jim, in Sam’s body, but all of Sam’s memories were gone, replaced with Jim’s after saving Melinda’s life.  It was a long story which only the few in their so called ‘Scooby Gang’ knew about.

“Mel, honey, don’t forget I have to work a double at the hospital today.  I won’t be home until at least two in the morning.  Looks like you and Aiden have the house to yourselves,” Jim said, speaking of their six-year-old son.

“Okay, Jim.  Just be careful out there.  It’s a full moon tonight,” Melinda said, giving her husband a kiss.

“Great, the crazies come out tonight.  Fun,” Eli said as he walked through the door.

“For a therapist, you seem to use that word a lot,” Ned replied, picking up his book bag.

“Ned, trust me, it’s a general term.  That’s why they call people with certain disorders “Loonies”, because of the Lunar phases,” Eli said.

“Okay, I know that’s not true,” Melinda laughed.

“No, it’s not, but it’s the best explanation they could ever come up with.  Who knows what will be waiting for us tonight?” Eli responded.

The gang stood quietly for a few seconds, then began to move about Grandview’s Town Square, all of them with the same thought on their minds.  What would happen?

Shawn stood patiently as he waited for Juliet to appear from the doorway to their bedroom.  He looked around the house, smiling slightly.  It was still hers, really, but soon it would be theirs.

He’d finally proposed to her a few months back.  She’d accepted, but it meant a lot of changes.  First, he moved to San Francisco to be with her, which meant he closed up Psych.  Gus moved here, too, which was rather shocking at first, but he was glad to still have his best friend and partner.

He felt somewhat responsible for Lassie becoming Chief of Police in Santa Barbara.  Well, he had helped solve the case that subsequently started Lassie’s new career.

His dad was living in a small apartment in Santa Barbara, with his mom.  Yeah, the memory still lingered in Shawn’s mind, which made him shiver to this day, but he was happy to see his parents back together after all these years.

Juliet appeared and cleared her throat.  Shawn stood in stunned silence.

“You…look beautiful,” he finally said, gulping.

Juliet smiled shyly, blushing at the compliment of her fiancé.  She caught a glimpse of her engagement ring, which had once belonged to Shawn’s grandma and grinned wider.

“You look good, too, Shawn.  Are you ready for our trip?” Juliet asked, mentally crossing her fingers Shawn remembered to pack all of their luggage.

“Everything is packed, my dear.  Don’t worry, I didn’t forget anything.  Eidetic memory, remember?” Shawn asked, pointing to his head.

Juliet shook her head, but knew that was true.  His eidetic memory had been one of many surprises he’d told her about after finding out he wasn't psychic.

The doorbell rang, sending the sounds of an old grandfather clock chiming through the house.  Shawn went and opened the door; encountering Gus on the other side, smiling.

“Hey, Buddy!  We’re just about ready to leave,” Shawn said, letting his friend in.

“Oh, I know.  I’m actually here to let you know that I found that old antique watch my grandfather gave me twenty years ago.  I wanted you to get it appraised, if you could.  There’s an antique store along the way in a town called Grandview,” Gus said, handing over a small, worn box.

“Grandview?” Juliet asked curiously.

“It’s a really small town down the freeway about one hundred or so miles.  It’s on the way to Baja,” Gus explained.

“Well, I suppose we’ll be okay to stop there for a night.  Is that okay, Jules?” Shawn asked, looking hopeful.

Juliet smiled at his puppy dog eyes.  How would she ever say no to him again? “Fine, but for one night, okay?  We have to be in Baja by Sunday afternoon for the spa appointment.”

“Sounds good to me.  Gus, I’ll take the watch and we’ll find out how much it’s worth,” Shawn said, opening the box.

Suddenly, the box flew out of Shawn’s hands and onto the floor.  He stood there, looking at the box like it had come alive.

“Why’d you throw it on the ground?” Gus asked, picking it up.

“I didn’t.  It flew out of my hands.  Like someone pulled it,” Shawn said, picking the box and the watch back up.

Gus’ eyes widened, “You know, I found that watch yesterday, and ever since then, strange things have been happening.”

“Gus, don’t be a Whopper without the malted center!”

Gus rolled his eyes.  Some things never change.
