“It’s not fair, is all I’m saying.” Juliet fast walked through the hallways, her partner trailing behind her, going at what she would call a snail’s pace. In reality, she was nearly sprinting, while he was straining to keep up.
“Shut up, Lassiter.” She mumbled as she scanned the room numbers
“He’s not even a cop, and he’s been shot twice! I’ve never been shot!”
“Would you like me to shoot you, Carlton?”
“Would you mind?”
“At this moment, not at all.”
“Come on O’Hara, lighten up.” At that, she stopped dead in her tracks, spun on her heels and glared at him with all she had. And, in a rare moment of truly not giving a shit, exploded at her partner.
“My boyfriend-“ she could practically hear him roll his eyes, as she talked quickly and purposefully, “yes, boyfriend, you lighten up- has just been shot for the second time in three years, so if you don’t mind, I’d like to find his stupid fucking hospital room and figure out if he’s going to die or not. Do you mind that? Would my shooting you shut you up?”
“Technically, yes.” Carlton said softly, with his hands raised slightly, the way one would talk down a suicidal man on top of a building.
After, and only after, taking a moment to shoot him her death glare- which was truly terrifying, just for your information- did she turn back and stalk through the halls, thrusting her badge in the face of anyone that held even a small chance of inquiring why she was in the ICU, severely on the verge of tears.
Left, right, up, left, left, left, right, up again, right, left, right, right, and she still couldn’t find the freaking room.
“Why is this so complicated?!”
“It might be the blind rage you are in.”
“Do you have a death wish?”
“Hey, if I hadn’t been running after you this whole time, you’d be either on the roof by now or… I don’t know… at home, in a puddle of metaphorical self-pity, I guess. I don’t- I don’t know how you spend your free time, and frankly, I don’t want to know. How about you let me find his room, and we can go there. Slowly, quietly.”
“You don’t understand, Carlton.” Her furiousness faded into vulnerability. What used to be 'on the verge of tears,' was now 'in tears-' but she wasn’t crying so much as her eyes were leaking. Juliet O’Hara doesn’t cry.
He sighed. While this wasn’t his area of expertise, he had only known her to cry the one time, and that was serious business. So, at least to her, this was serious business, too. “You’re right. I don’t. I don’t know what your position is like right now. At least, not entirely. But I have had someone I… care about, I’ve had her life hanging in the balance, quite literally.” She looked at him. They both knew exactly to what he was referring. “And from what I know from that situation- what Spencer taught me, is that staying calm is the best and only option. Now can we find Spencer’s room, so I can take his statement and promptly leave?” An ounce of irritation cracked through Lassiter’s well placed mask of indifference. It was Shawn’s fault this all happened anyway.

“Jesus. Twenty minutes later and 14 hospital employees scared shitless and we’ve only just found his room.” They stood in front of Shawn’s door. 304A.
“He’s always been hard to nail down…” Juliet said contemplatively- actually contemplatively- as Lassiter stared at her, horrified. “…Not like that! Christ, Carlton.” She put her hand on the doorknob before Carlton stopped her. “What now? Hell, you know what, I will shoot you.”
“Now’s not the time. Now, we’ve set up our, uh, let’s call them ‘Shules Rules’ before. (Author’s note: (; shules rules! Lassie rhymed!) No PG rated physical contact within a football field of me. No meaningful glances. No shmoozy-lovey-dovey-talking. No kissing or other things of that nature within earshot, eyeshot, or any other shots, because we both know what I’ll do with that kind of wordplay. These rules stand in this room.”
“In that case, go take his statement. I’ll wait out here, because I really don’t want you shooting Shawn.” She grinned at him wickedly, though with a hint of actual irritation. She just wanted to see her boyfriend who very nearly died three hours before the fact. Was that too much to ask?
“Elch, even the imagery is enough to give me a bad taste in my mouth.” Juliet opened her mouth to reply, surely with something he didn’t want to hear about mouth tastings. “I don’t want to hear it O’Hara.” He slammed the door behind him. And while she really, really, wanted to know for certain that he was okay and that he’d be fine, she trusted that he was in the second-best hands he could possibly be in.
Lassiter didn't know what to expect- he had left the scene before realizing that Shawn had been injured- but when he opened that door, the breath was knocked right out of him.
