SANTA BARBARA 1987
"Ay man! i'm innocent!" yelled the vandalizer from the back of Henry Spencers cop car. "I ain't sayin' nottin man. Whoever did it made sure that bitch deserved what she got thas all." Henry spencer curled his lip at a vulgar word. Shawn was in the seat next to him. he wanted Shawn to know exactly what his job meant and that he can be a super hero too. He was rounding a corner when he saw the idiot, well i guess technically he heard him first, destroying a young womans car while yelling at her about what a slut she was. Henry took control of the situation quickly while Shawn stayed in the car and watched in awe at his brave dad. The vandalizer, now known as Rick, had been pleading his case ever since he was shoved into the back. Once Henry heard cusswords flying out of his mouth, he checked his mirrors for any surrounding cars, put a hand over Shawns chest, and slammed on the breaks; sending Rick into the divider face first.
"Ay, whadja do tha fo?" voiced Rick as he leaned up. Henry looked back at him.
"Watch your mouth," he growled. He turned back to the front and started moving forward once more. "I want you to remember this because it might be the most important thing you learn. Whenever your in a position of vulnerability, you always need to watch what you say. You don't know how they will react." Shawn looked at his father and nodded his head. Shawn didn't know what his father was rambling about but he found it had been safer to just agree then blurt what was really on his mind, which at this moment was a cross between super hero dogs and his next invention, the flying shoes.

Henry leaned over and pulled his radio to his mouth. "Henry Spencer reporting can be there in 5" He turned at the next corner and soon pulled next to a drabby house with toys littering the front yard. Henry pulled at his radio again. " Children are present, requesting backup." He looked over at Shawn. "I need you to unbuckle and stay low to the floor." Little Spencer did as he was told and Henry walked out of the car.
"Whadda bout me?" yelled Rick. Henry leaned his head in.
"Keep your mouth shut or i'll make sure it stays shut for you." Henry walked away with his gun in hand, towards the house. Shawns curiosity got the best of him and he stretched his neck to look out the window. That's when he heard a gunshot and a thud. He looked out his window and saw nothing. His dad was gone.

Henry Spencer walked up to the side window and peered inside. Already his anger was boiling at the sight in front of him. A woman about late twenties was rocking back and forth with a seven year old child in her arms, pale, limp, and red all over. He went to go to the front door when he noticed there was another child sitting on the couch just staring at the pair of them, frozen. His heart rate rose again as he saw the pistol still clutched in her hands.
Henry wasn't sure what to do. If he waited for back up the woman might go crazy even more and kill the other boy. And if he intruded she might kill the boy. One look back at the scene and the woman had made up her mind for him. She pushed the bloodied corpse away from her and began to sit next to the other boy on the couch; pistol in hand.
Henry went around to the back of the house and climbed through an open window. He left one of the boys bedrooms that had been littered with toy trucks and silently creeped into the hall with his gun raised. Sobbing noises could be heard from around the corner and then a click as the pistol cocked its blood stained metal. Henry yelled out. "Ma'am." He heard a startled voice that went straight back into tearful gasps of air. Henry came out from around the corner. "Ma'am put the gun down. This doesn't have to end like this. Just put the gun. down."
She looked up at him. She had messy blonde hair with hazy green eyes that had dark circles under her eyes making her look hollow. "He left me. He went to Afghanistan and left me. How am i going to raise them by myself?" She choked back her sobs and straightened her back. "i think it's time i join him with my son." And with that, she put the gun to her mouth and pulled the trigger.
Shawn started to worry and after much deliberation, decided to check it out himself. Once he opened his door though, he heard his father yelling at him to get back inside as he walked towards the vehicle with a bundle in his arms. He went to the drivers side and placed a small boy next to Shawn.
"Shawn, this is David. Can you keep him busy while i get to work?" Shawn nodded his head and then looked at the young boy. Henry walked back into the house and began to process the scene. He started with the bloody child and checked for even the faintest chance at a pulse. He put his forefingers to his neck and sighed once he realized he was right once again. Henry decided to wait until the others could come and went back out to his car to wait.

Meanwhile...
"Names Spencer. Shawn Spencer, but everyone calls me Whitesnake" Shawn extended his hand out to him but the boy never took it. Shawn lowered his hand and his smile. The strange boy looked at Shawn and shook his head to refocus.
"I'm David, and everyone calls me David." David looked at Shawn before quickly looking away again. Then repeated this action five times.
"why are you doing that?" asked Shawn.
"well, umm, its just that, well, you just look a lot like my little brother, thats all."
"You must have a good looking brother then," Smiled Shawn. David looked over at him again.
"Do you like Tonka trucks?" asked David. Shawn raised an eyebrow and pulled out a toy truck from his pockets.
"Dad said a police car is cooler but i finally broke him down into buying me one." David smiled for the first time since his mom got the letter about his dad. Even though he had seen his brother lie limp in her arms, he couldn't believe he was gone. And here was the proof. His brother Michael may be calling himself Whitesnake now but his eyes are the same. He was just impressed with how quickly he had changed his clothes. he didn't care why his brother had pretended to be dead, all he knew was that he was glad he wasn't.

"The mother went crazy once she found out her husband died and shot the youngest boy. She appeared to be about to shoot the other boy but i intervened and she shot herself instead," said Henry to his chief. His boss looked deeply saddened at the news.
"What about the other boy, have you contacted social services?"
"Yea, they will be here to pick him up in an hour." The chief nodded his head and smiled once he saw the two boys playing outside in the hallway.
"Make sure you let them know that he needs to talk to a psychologist. I can't imagine anyone watching their family die coming out of it without severe trauma."
"He seems fine with Shawn. Whenever i talk to him alone however, he instantly freezes."
"Until social services get here will you watch over him?"
"Of course."
"Your dismissed"
Henry got up and walked out of his bosses office. Shawn and David had started playing a game of high speed racing with their toy trucks. Henry sat down at his desk. He looked very tired as he felt the weight of the day shove his chest down. that poor kid is never going to grow up normal. He is most likely going to be bounced around from foster home to foster home where god-knows-what happens.
Despite none of this being Henrys fault, he felt guilty anyways.

One hour later...
"NO!!" screamed David. Why were they separating him from his brother? he thought. This wasn't fair! "I don't want to go!"
Shawn looked as his new friend thrash around in the womans arms. He was worried about David but his dad had told him that David was going with people that cared about him. That's why he was confused with his friends sudden determination against adults.
"David, don't worry. We can play later. I promise. One day we will get back together and have the greatest day ever. Until next time!" shouted Shawn. David looked back at Shawn with glistening eyes. Yea, until next time.
