“Tell me what the police know about us!” the man demanded, slamming a fist into Shawn’s gut.

Doubling over, Shawn gasped for air. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could keep this up, but he knew he had to do it as long as he could until help arrived. Gus should be worried by now, and if Gus was worried, that meant he’d find a way to get Lassiter and Juliet to come.

“I don’t know … exactly.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Well, I know what I saw in a vision, but I’m not sure what they figured out on their own. Maybe if you give me the details, I’ll be able to tell you what the police know and don’t know.”

“Ha, right. Just so you can mentally transmit that information or something? I don’t think so.” The man hit Shawn again, this time in the jaw.

Just then, the other robber entered the room. “Hey, Joe. I finished hiding the money like you told me to.”

Shawn’s observant eye noticed several small pieces of pink insulation clinging to the man’s shirt sleeves and the dust smudging the knees of his pants.

“Good. Now take care of this guy.”

“Wait!” Shawn held up a hand as the second guy pulled out a gun. “Are you sure you want to do that? The police are already on their way, and you wouldn’t want to get caught with a smoking gun and a dead psychic.” Outwardly, he sounded confident in the arrival of back-up. Inwardly, he was desperately hoping Gus had managed to get the detectives to come check the house out.

“We’ll take our chances,” Joe smiled. “Good-bye, Mr. Spencer.”

Right as the other man’s finger moved to the trigger, lights and sirens flashed outside.

“Hold it!” Joe hurried to the window and cracked the blinds open. “Oh great. Looks like the psychic was telling the truth.” He turned back to the other two. “Give me your gun. Come ‘ere, Psychic.” He wrapped an arm around the shorter man’s neck and put the gun to his head. “Now open the door, Bob.”

Bob obeyed, and Joe stepped into the view of the cops, still holding onto Shawn.

“Hey!” he called.

Lassiter and Juliet were on their way up the walk with their guns drawn when Joe and Shawn came into sight. They froze at the sight of the revolver pressed against Shawn’s temple.

“Anyone comes anywhere near this place, and you’ll be cleaning up quite the mess.”

Shawn’s mind was whirling as he tried to come up with a way for the police to take Joe down without getting himself killed in the process. Nothing even slightly possible came to mind, but sometimes the best plans come in unexpected ways.

Joe finished giving out his list of demands to the police, telling them they had 15 minutes to evacuate the property so he could leave. As he began to back up to close the door, Shawn managed to twist his leg behind his captor’s. Joe tripped and stumbled backwards, allowing Shawn to slip free.

“Go, Lassie, go!” Shawn yelled, dashing through the doorway. He could hear the detective and Joe shouting and the sound of gunshots. Ignoring it all, he simply ran as fast as he could for the safety of the cars in the street. He kept low to the ground as he ran, reasoning that the Joe was more concerned with the armed, invading police than an unarmed, escaping hostage.

However, stray bullets don’t quite know how to listen to reason.

Right before he reached the curb, a streak of fire brushed across the side of his head. Blackness met him as he tumbled forward off the grass.

Buzz McNabb saw him fall and ran towards him. Shawn came to just as the man reached him.

Wide, fear-filled eyes looked up at the man with the gun. Shawn scrambled to his feet and tore across the yard, away from all the commotion.

“Shawn!” Gus yelled, throwing open the door to one of the cars. Lassiter had told him to stay put until any shooting ended but seeing his friend running like a scared rabbit was enough to get him moving.

Gus and Buzz caught up to Shawn as he stumbled and fell. Shawn landed in a heap in the grass, and this time he didn’t get up.
