I can't really quote a favorite line from this chapter. The whole thing just worked together so well and had just the right mix of melancholy and *snerk* humor.
I do love Gus' epitaph though. So very fitting that it makes me want to cry. In fact, I just might before this is over and the fact that I know that and I'm still not exiting out says something about your ability to keep me on the hook.
I love how you've captured Shawn. He's got that same mix of being . . . hardened I guess by lost innocence and yet he's still got that free-spirited sense of humor that can sneak up on you and make you laugh when you should be crying. He's not quite the same Shawn we watch every Friday night and love to death right now, but at the same time he's *exactly* that same Shawn. He's undeniably matured but he hasn't let this tragedy embitter him. It's FREAKIN' AWESOME and I am jealous.
"Lassie must've loved it." There was fondness in his tone.
Okay, I had to mention this one because it's so perfect for what I feel about this Shawn you're showing us. It's just . . . so Shawn, and yet, not something he'd probably say in that way if not for what's happened. It just . . . yeah. It rocks. :D
and to prove to herself that he was real and not a ghost or a hallucination.
This was honestly the point at which I was sure he really was there. Srsly.
Okay, I'll admit, I had my suspicions about the identity of 'The Whisper' back in the first chapter, but not knowing the living status of all but two of the characters made it hard to be sure. Now I'm really pretty sure and frankly . . . I LIKE IT! Definite exciting potential there! :D

Gus's epitaph...I went looking for Carl Sagan quotes, because that just felt right for Gus; and then that particular quote seemed perfect. I think Gus picked it out himself, though Shawn might've...eh, with them it hardly matters which one of them really did it.
Ahhhh yes you know exactly how to tell a writer what she wants to hear...this is just what I wanted Shawn to be like. When my sister were talking about this scenario, Shawn being, hmm, visibly depressed, didn't work; he's just not like that. But I don't see him totally faking a smile, either; it's different than that, it's that he can move on, in some ways. And he can grow up, but all the same...

Not that you need any sort of explaination. You have a good numer of reviews and can, I am sure live without mine. But I wanted to say that I am still loving this story and am enjoying reading it, but I had a friend die recently. Which, for what ever reason, is making it hard for me to review the story. So, you did not lose me as a reader I am just holding off on reviewing for the time being.

Love it love it love! This is so cool. I mean, way sad, but also cool. And you got Shawn down so well. I think I know who the Whisper is of course. And I think that's way awesome. And of course after 10 years Shawn is still absolutely adorable. Futuristic fics rock. Lovin it. Oh and why did Karen get transfered?

I don't think I'll get into this in the story but I'm pretty sure Karen transferred as a sort of lateral promotion, got the chief of police position in another city for a higher salary. That's the in-story explanation, of course; the real reason is that I wanted Lassie to be chief, and couldn't bear killing an entire half of the cast!

I'm guess the Whisperer is Shawn and Juliet is guessing that's who it is as well. Wow, this story is just so sad. The emotion while Juliet was recalling the story of before Shawn left Santa Barbara was really strong and just sad...the whole part during the funeral and everything.

Henry and Gus are dead? Damn...poor Shawn...
I like how you didn't reveal Juilet's hair cut until later into the story, and how you let things slip in slowly, bit by bit, like the head detective-chief thing and Buzz being a lieutenant and all. Adds a nice touch of realism.
Shawn's the 'whisper' isn't he? And the whole thing about how he finally just flat out said he was a fake when drunk and all.
Anyway, this sounds like it's really interesting, so please hurry up and update ASAP.

I love reading stories where you find out what's going on bit by bit, so I do my best to write them that way (and Juliet's haircut...heh. I think every time I've written a futurefic I've ended up cutting someone's hair; don't know what that says about me psychologically, but...)
